The Old Woman who Named Things
Cynthia Rylant

We think that the theme of the book is overcoming bad experiences because, the old lady didn't want to be lonely with no friends to call by name, so she didn't name anything that she would outlive.

Then one day a little brown puppy came to her front gate, she thought it looked hungry so she fed it some food and told it to go away. The following day the shy brown puppy came back to her front step and the old woman fed it and told it to go away again so she did not have to name it, because she didn't want to outlive it like she outlived her friends and family. She kept doing this over and over again so that she didn't have to name it and outlive it.

Then one day, the shy pup didn't come to her house, so she started searching for it. When the woman got to the dog catcher, he asked her questions about it. "He's a shy brown puppy. About a year old." The woman said to the dog catcher. "We have a yard full of shy brown dogs." replied the dog catcher. He led her into a fenced in area.

The dog catcher asked what the dog's name was, then she thought about how lucky she was to have the friends she had a long time ago, and how lucky she would be to have a dog like him that she would be able to live with. " His name is lucky." said the old lady. Then she took him home, as a new friend in her life that she knew she would someday outlive, but she did not care about outliving it, all she cared about was having a new buddy to call by name.
